Drove past Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park over the weekend and ran into a herd of elephants right on the road. Cows and juveniles in a loose group, dust hanging in the air behind them. I cut the engine and waited.
There was a young calf with them — couldn’t have been more than a year old. Stayed close to its mother at first, then started getting curious about the truck.
Then this little one decided to charge. Ears out, trunk up, the whole performance. Came straight at the truck. At that size it’s more funny than scary — but you still don’t move. The mother was watching and she wasn’t bluffing.
Sat there for a good ten minutes until they cleared the road. No rush. You don’t honk at elephants.
